If you have been considering buying a water fountain for your garden but were worried about electrical cables, why not buy a solar powered water fountain?
Benefits of buying a solar powered water fountain
You don’t need to worry about fuel costs and it can be put up wherever you wish so long as it is not completely overlooked. The sun must hit the solar panel in order to build up the power so they are best suited to wide open spaces and not those covered by trees or awning. Some people think that they will build up power during the day to work at night when the sun goes down. This is how solar heating will work in your home but the solar powered water fountain behaves slightly differently. They only operate when there is direct sunlight. If you live in an area that doesn’t get much sunshine this is probably not the best model of garden fountain you could buy.

The reasons why you would choose a solar powered pond fountain or water feature are numerous. As we have mentioned they do not increase your fuel bills so you do not have to worry about leaving them on. Perhaps more importantly you do not have to run electric cables so they are safer around children. Mixing kids, electricity and water is not a good idea. The fountains are very low maintenance, generally easy to set up and use and they don’t increase your carbon footprint. Most models will contain a piece of sponge covering the pump so you don’t have to worry about debris clogging it up.
These types of water fountain are not suitable to weather extremes. You cannot use them when it is freezing or you risk the solar panel cracking and perhaps the fountain itself. They will work on cloudy days but you may find that the water runs a lot more slowly.
They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and some have inbuilt bird baths if you want to attract more birds to your garden. If you choose one of these models you will need to clean it more regularly than a standard solar powered water fountain. Birds, while beautiful, leave a mess and you will need to check the quality of the water on a more regular basis.
Generally an outdoor water fountain will have to be cleaned more often than an indoor model. If you have a breezy day, leaves and other debris will need to be removed. It sounds obvious but you should only use a water fountain outdoors if it has been built for that purpose. The materials will be suitable for the different temperatures.
You can buy products that will help prevent algae from growing on your water feature. Some people recommend adding a little bleach to the water. This can work but it can also destroy the materials the fountain is made from so proceed with caution.
The technology behind Solar powered water fountains is always evolving so it worth checking out what new styles are available.
